Job Description

We are looking for a mid/senior “full stack” Python developer to work alongside our Head of Software. Together you will develop and support our customer facing portal, data workbench, business intelligence platform and our internal lab management systems. You will need to be a specialist in building secure, well-tested web applications using Django though there is scope for the successful candidate to influence all parts of our stack. This is a small, successful, organically grown company and there will be a wide variety of things to work on (we use robots!), and necessarily some shifting priorities. Benefits

  • To contribute to the design and implementation of MicrobesNG’s applications and infrastructure.
  • To be involved in technology selection on new projects, and to suggest operational changes where you can see benefit.
  • To follow quality control and compliance procedures, helping to close gaps and seek continuous improvement.
  • To keep your peers and line manager apprised of progress and to actively communicate blockers and seek their resolution.
  • To be interested in general business operations and to assist other departments as and when required.
  • To be reasonably available during core UK business hours for occasional meetings and other discussions. We do ask the team to attend monthly 1-day onsite visits in Birmingham, but candidates for whom this is not practical will be considered.

Requirements

  • Strong Python, Django, SQL, JavaScript, HTML, CSS
  • Pragmatic approach to achieving good test coverage
  • Experience implementing public-facing web applications
  • Experience designing and implementing common web architectures, and configuring their components (e.g. NGinx, MySQL, Redis)
  • Comfort with cloud deployments – e.g. AWS – an advantage
  • Experience solving challenges with observability and diagnostics
  • A respectful and pragmatic approach to providing technical guidance to colleagues
  • A grounding in Linux sysadmin and network concepts
  • Good English proficiency
  • Experience using, maintaining and designing CI
  • Experience with database schema design and optimisation
  • Knowledge of security- and privacy-by-design principles
  • Existing eligibility for the right to work in the UK at point of application

About the Company

MicrobesNG is a genome sequencing facility dedicated to providing microbial sequence data to our expanding global customer base. We currently sequence over 40,000 genomes each year from a wide variety of medical, agricultural and environmental microbes including bacteria, fungi, viruses and plasmids. After our extraordinary success working within the University of Birmingham for 5 years we spun out and set up as an independent company in August 2019. Having increased our business since then, we are looking to expand the company and our services.
